You Don’t Have to Deal with a Noisy Air Conditioner

If an air conditioner is running in the family room but no one is in there to hear it, does it still make noise? All sources point to yes regardless of manufacturer, model or mode. Though AC units draw humidity from the air, keep people cool and comfortable, and make those scorching days a little more bearable, they don’t exactly do so without some level of audible complaint. Most people just grin and bear it, but air conditioner noise levels do cause a few problems.

The Compensation Factor

In order to regulate temperature and save energy, air conditioners cycle on and off. While they’re running and producing their powerful roars, something has to be done to overcome the drone. Television and radio volumes get turned up, and conversations take place at higher decibels; unfortunately, when the AC shuts off, nothing else seems to automatically follow suit.

By the time everything is adjusted to compensate for the lack of extra noise, the AC starts back up, and the vicious cycle completes another round. While this may only be a minor annoyance, it does leave people and appliances yelling for no reason and lead to far too many unnecessary repeats.

Sleepless Nights and Snappy Days

An estimated 80 percent of the world’s population suffers from some degree of sleeplessness. Whether this lack of rest stems from medications or stress, it tends to have a negative impact on physical health and mental well-being.

Although loud air conditioning isn’t typically the cause of the problem, its repetitive nightly wake-up calls don’t exactly help with the matter either. When sleep is interrupted time and time again, you tend to end up with a house full of grumpy people and plenty of less-than-productive days.

Is There a Solution?

All air conditioners have fans, pumps, motors and other moving parts; otherwise, they wouldn’t work. Tucking them away outside or in the basement or attic can help muffle the sound, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still there in the background. Having said that, some are definitely quieter than others.

Portable air conditioners and window units tend to be the most troublesome in the volume department because they’re usually close by. A select few of the latest models have been designed to help combat the noise as well as the problems it can cause. Alternatives are available, so you’re not doomed to simply deal with the common dilemma.
